Monthly thresholds are the days in the month divided by the days in the year, times each annual threshold, rounded to the dollar. The estimator works out the full-year amount; the Annual Adjustment Return settles any difference from the monthly returns.

Wages paid only in Tasmania
A business pays $3,000,000 of taxable wages in Tasmania for the full year and none elsewhere. The $750,000 between $1.25m and $2m is taxed at 4% ($30,000), and the $1,000,000 above $2m at 6.1% ($61,000): about $91,000 for the year.
Wages paid in Tasmania and Queensland
A business pays $1,800,000 in Tasmania and $600,000 in Queensland, so $2,400,000 in Australia. Tasmania is 75% of the wages, so the thresholds become $937,500 and $1,500,000. Tasmanian tax is 4% of the $562,500 between them plus 6.1% of the $300,000 above: about $40,800. Queensland payroll tax is worked out separately; the estimator above shows both.
These businesses are made up. Each one is a single employer, not part of a group.
TAS payroll tax questions
What is the Tasmanian payroll tax threshold?
$1,250,000 a year, according to SRO Tasmania. You don't pay Tasmanian payroll tax if your Australian wages (or your group's) are $1.25m or less. It's reduced if you pay wages interstate or only paid wages for part of the year.
What are the Tasmanian payroll tax rates?
4% on taxable wages between $1.25m and $2m, and 6.1% on wages above $2m. An employer that doesn't claim a threshold pays 6.1% on all its Tasmanian wages.
How do the thresholds work if I pay wages interstate?
Both thresholds are multiplied by your Tasmanian wages divided by your Australian wages, as in SRO Tasmania's Annual Adjustment Return guideline.
When are Tasmanian payroll tax returns due?
Monthly returns are due by the 7th of the next month. Every employer lodges an Annual Adjustment Return by 21 July, which replaces the June monthly return, so 21 July 2027 for 2026–27.
